Staying in Amsterdam and looking to visit one of the famous coffeeshops around town? Then you will want to know when these shops are open. Coffeeshop opening hours vary, with many being open from 9 or 10 am and with closing times that vary from 7pm through to 1am, with some opening later at weekends.
Below, we will list a few that are open from as early as 7am, for early birds, and a few that keep open until late, but do remember that opening times may be changed depending on the time of year, so check if you have to travel some distance to get to your chosen coffeeshop to avoid disappointment. According to local regulations, all coffeeshops must closed by 1am, so if you see any shops advertised as open later, it may be that you can still enjoy music or other entertainment there, but you may not be able to buy cannabis.

Many coffeeshops are themed or are known for a particular style or type of music, so it is worth visiting some different coffeeshops to find one with a vibe that agrees with you. Officially, you are not permitted to visit one coffeeshop more than twice in any 24-hour period, although this would seem to be quite difficult to enforce, specially at busy times of the year.
Coffeeshops operate in a slightly grey area in the Netherlands, and are subject to quite strict rules. Here are the main Amsterdam coffee shop smoking rules for 2017:
- No advertising is allowed, just a sticker on the door or window
- No hard drugs can be sold, only marihuana products
- No entrance (and sale) for people under the age of 18
- Max. 5 grams per person can be sold per day
- Stock of max. 500 gram is permitted in any one shop
- No alcohol can be sold
- May not be situated within 250 metres of a school
